FLORIDA TURFGRASSES

This forum will help you identify, diagnose, and treat your turfgrass.

LAWN MOWING HEIGHT

It is important to mow your lawn high to develope deep roots.  A mowing height of 3" allows the grass to have plenty of green leaves to develope a deep root system.  Deep roots allow the grass to absorb more water and not brown out during high periods of heat.  It is important to never cut more than 1/3 of the total height of the grass off in one single mowing.  If you need to cut it lower wait a couple days after the initial 1/3 cut and come back and cut another 1/3 of the grass.  The only downside to keeping you lawn height around 4-5 inches is that it will develope a thicker thatch and will eventually need to be aerated.
